Soulful: The Saxophones Fanlisting

Brief information on saxophones

Saxophones (or saxes, colloquially) are woodwind instruments, despite generally being made from brass. They were invented in 1841 by Adolphe Sax, a Belgian-born instrument maker and were originally designed for military band use, but have been used in many different styles of music. However, they are probably most commonly associated with jazz. The four most common types of saxophone, starting with the smallest, are soprano, alto, tenor and baritone. There are bigger and smaller saxophones around though. All have the same key arrangement and fingerings, so a competent player can quite easily switch between the different types.

The above is what I've summarised from this Wikipedia article. Check it out for more detailed information, including history, manufacture, uses, techniques etc. They also have a list of saxophonists.
